In the month leading up to our annual holiday party at Florence Western Medical Center, there was a great deal of excitement in the air. Carly Krause, a dedicated RMF volunteer and I began the preparations for our 3rd annual holiday party, with our attendance expected to double to approximately 50-60 children. Florence Western’s Medical Director, Dr. Kevin Thomas, introduced us to Mary Miller, who was excited to join the RMF team for this year’s party. On a limited budget, we sought donations of food, toys and supplies for the children – and exactly one week before the party…

Real Medicine Foundation continues to provide physical and emotional support to children and adults within the greater Los Angeles area. With our children’s programs, this past month we focused on how to approach situations which can cause a great deal of stress within our everyday lives. Most of the children who participate in our programs are being raised by family members other than their parents, and are at high risk for future physical and psychological problems.

Our workshop “Turning lemons into lemonade” gave the children the opportunity to discuss different situations which…

The Real Medicine Foundation's Psycho-Trauma Teams have completed the first phase of our pilot project, using mobile quick-response teams for the psychological support and counseling of children affected by disasters, as well as their parents, caregivers, teachers and community members. The concept had been devised shortly after the 2004 tsunami, realizing how desperately psychological and emotional support for the victims was missing.

Working closely with the Superintendent of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Mary McDonald, we supported the approximately 330 displaced Gulf Coast children and their families that had been welcomed into the 29 schools of…

We worked in a shelter that provided space…

The training on identifying trauma in children is one of the best trainings we've experienced as an organization. Dr. Andrea Shirley presented us with a world of knowledge, focused on what our kids (urban youth) are struggling with on a daily basis.

I was personally shocked to hear about the statistics on homeless families in Los Angeles. It is a dreadful reality to know that families are hurting throughout the United States. I learned that homelessness goes hand-in-hand with violence, rejection, and underdevelopment, unhealthy and unsecured lifestyles. This is…

Overview

The daily stress of hunger, financial need, and an unsafe social environment puts thousands of children in the Skid Row area at increased risk for life-long physical and emotional illness. Many are physically and sexually abused, and all are exposed to violence, crime, and drug abuse on the streets where they live. The teachers in their schools are mandated by law to report any cases of abuse or other emotional trauma. This reporting would result in the children receiving care or treatment from outside agencies and professionals, and is often the only hope they have for a…

Recent FEMA statistics account for nearly 17,000 hurricane Katrina evacuees registered in California seeking federal assistance. Because only a single family member in a household can apply for FEMA aid, the actual number is likely to be significantly higher. In many cases evacuee households contain at least 3-4 family members. In addition not all evacuees have registered with FEMA thereby raising the true count even higher. Many of the evacuees living in California are children. Data collection inconsistencies make it difficult to know exactly how many evacuees are children. However, estimates suggest that between 40 and 70 percent of…

It's the end of the school day, and a young boy begins to cry as his father arrives to retrieve him from school. The boy's teachers learn that he is beaten daily, and that his father covers his face when he cries to muffle the noise and keep him quiet.

Another young child waits patiently for his parents to pick him up. However, with a mother addicted to crack cocaine and an alcoholic father, the boy is regularly left at school, waiting…

On December 12th, the Real Medicine Foundation hosted a holiday party at Nuestra Clinica. We were very excited to have a team of about 15 volunteers (plus teacher!) from Oscar de la Hoya High School in Boyle Heights to help decorate the room and assist the children with games and activities. The volunteers came up with all the activities and games as well as purchased the supplies — there was cookie decorating, paper mache ornament making, and painting. The children all left with a gift bag full of gifts that the volunteers had collected ranging from snacks to toys…

The July of 2008, Carol Daugherty and Greg Jahangiri opened the Nuestra Clinica in Boyle Heights. From its inception, the clinic has been built on the principal of providing patient oriented healthcare with a focus on bridging the gap left by many health plans that are often limited in coverage and scope of care. Those without coverage are not turned away even if they are unable to pay the low treatment fees.

The Clinic currently has over 1300 active patients and provides 125-150 patients per week with general care such as: physicals, vaccinations, STD testing and treatments, gynecological…

It has been close to a month now since our “Big Sunday” extravaganza! We opened our doors May 30th to the children of Boyle Heights, offering two workshops. Mischa Allen from Up Dog Down Dog Yoga, along with Dominique Salamone provided the children with their first experience with yoga, followed by an art project using recycled materials. "Big Sunday” doesn’t even begin to describe the weekend we and our team of volunteers experienced. Our journey with “Big Sunday” began with Patti Callicot. Patti had been a part of the community garden project at Phoenix House in Venice Beach the prior year, and provided us with the introduction to Big Sunday’s founder David Levinson.

When we first met with Carol and Greg from Nuestra Clinica, they had expressed the desire and need for a community outreach program for members of their community in Boyle Heights but the space in the clinic was very…
