Tsunami Report: Early warning system fails

October 27, 2010 - Sri Lanka

Almost 6 years after the last Tsunami in Indonesia and the founding of Real Medicine in Sri Lanka, another Tsunami has struck the area,  this one resulting with at least 272 dead and so far another 400 missing.   Officials are saying there were faults with an early warning system designed to alert locals to the 3m-high (10ft) wave.

Now four years into RMF’s partnership with KOMPIP, RMF is taking a step back to reflect on the successes of our joint Neighborhood Endowment Fund Program thus far.

This community-owned revolving fund initiative provides its members with access to small loans for micro-enterprise purposes. Each neighborhood has its own fund and democratically elects three to four people to administer the fund voluntarily, acting in the capacities of leader, treasurer and secretary. Earthquake kills 75 in Indonesia

In Indonesia, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit early this morning near the city of Padang, on the island of Sumatra. At least 75 people are dead and officials say that number is expected to rise with thousands trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings, including at least two hospitals.

This follows another earthquake with an 8.0 magnitude that struck near the South Pacific island nations of Samoa and Tonga and the US territory of American Samoa.  The quake triggered a massive tsunami that killed an estimated 100 people, including more than 30 people in American Samoa.

Community Savings Success Story: Mrs. Marsiyem

Mrs. Marsiyem is a traveling bread seller in her home town of Birit Village, Indonesia.

Early in the morning she buys baskets of unbaked breads from the market and spends the rest of the day distributing them to different warungs (small restaurants). It is hard work but she is thankful to have it.

In 2008, when the community savings project began, Mrs. Marsiyem signed up along with the rest of her family and after receiving the initial load of 200.000 rupiah, she was able to start her business.

Community Savings Success Story: Grandmother Harto

Grandmother Harto, a 65 year old widow and mother of five, is one of the thousands of people still affected by the devastating 2006 earthquake in Indonesia.  However, thanks to the Community Savings Project: The People’s First Endowment, she is also one of the many people who have been able to rebuild their homes and their lives.

Java Community Savings Success Stories: A Look Back

Looking back…

On Saturday, May 27, 2006, at 5:54 a.m., local time, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck near the city of Yogyakarta on the Indonesian island of Java leaving an estimated 6,000 dead, 50,000 injured, and over 200,000 displaced and desperate.

Within weeks Real Medicine took action to rebuild Mlese Village, a grouping of nineteen neighborhoods (RT) located ten kilometers or six miles from the mid-sized city of Klaten, Central Java where 99% of family houses were either severely damaged or destroyed.

Real Medicine Foundation/Yayasan KOMPIP Joint Community Savings Project

Mlese Village is an amalgamation of nineteen neighborhoods (RT) located ten kilometers or six miles from the mid-sized city of Klaten, Central Java. In the aftermath of the May 24, 2006 earthquake, forty-one villagers from Mlese were found dead. Over 99% of the village’s houses were either severely damaged or destroyed, making the per capita destruction worse than Banda Aceh’s in the 2004 tsunami. This past October, Real Medicine Foundation (RMF) issued a $10,800 grant to Yayasan KOMPIP (YK) to expand YK’s TRT or “community savings” project in Mlese Village, Central Java.

Relief Effort Indonesia Earthquake May 27, 2006

May 27, 2006 - Indonesia

A magnitude-6.3 earthquake struck at 5:54 a.m. on May 27 near the ancient city of Yogyakarta, 250 miles east of Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. The massive earthquake has so far killed almost 5,700 people, seriously wounded more than 20,000 and left 200,000 homeless.

Many of the homeless people remained near their damaged residences in makeshift shelters. Since the quake struck, there have been several hundred aftershocks. The earthquake’s epicenter was close to the rumbling Mount Merapi volcano, and activity increased soon after the temblor. Read on…
