Since the fighting began again in Juba, South Sudan in early July 2016, thousands of South Sudanese have been fleeing the country. By July 28, 2016, the time of this report, 45,891 of these refugees had arrived in Uganda. Hundreds and thousands of new arrivals enter Uganda each day, filling transit centers, reception centers, and refugee camps to overflowing. On July 28, 2016, UNHCR’s emergency update reports:

  • 2,806 South Sudanese refugees arrived in Uganda on July 27, 2016.
  • 90% of new arrivals in the West Nile region were women and children.
  • Work began on the new Bidibidi Refugee Settlement close to the South Sudanese border in the Yumbe district to accommodate the rising number of South Sudanese refugees.
