OCHA has released a report detailing the current situation in Somalia and its response to the famine that has taken hold of the nation. More than 411,000 school age children have been displaced since November 2016 due to drought and conflict, and people in crisis are in immediate need of access to food and clean water.
Humanitarian needs remain high. The number of people in IPC 4 (Emergency) has grown tenfold from 83,000 people in January 2017 to 866,000 in January 2018. Overall, more than 6.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, 3.3 million of these require urgent life-saving assistance. Nearly 1.2 million children are projected to be malnourished and approximately 232,000 of these will face life-threatening severe acute malnutrition. Internal displacement has doubled to above 2.1 million people. On 17 January, humanitarians presented the 2018 Humanitarian Response Plan seeking US$1.6 billion to provide life-saving and protection assistance to 5.4 million people. The Response Plan is an extension of last year’s famine prevention efforts. Resources are needed urgently to enable humanitarian partners to sustain famine prevention efforts in 2018.

In June 2017, RMF distributed 450 food packages to IDPs (internally displaced persons) in Ceelasha Biyaha, Somalia . Our first distribution consisted of 150 food packages containing pasta, canned tuna, and dates. Each package held enough to feed a family of 6 for 10 days. During our second outreach, we successfully distributed 300 food packages. Each of these packages contained enough food to feed a family of 6 for 5 days. RMF’s intervention will continue responding to the immediate emergency food crises and needs of drought and conflict-affected communities, through the provision of a food voucher system for 150 households within Kahda District and Adale District.
