Peru – Attack!!

November 10, 2007 - Peru

Our computer somehow became infected with spyware. This was one of the most annoying experiences of our trip thus far. The spyware increasingly got worse as I spent many hours trying to remove it. It really started to affect our work because we couldn’t efficiently use the computer. I ran Norton Antivirus, Ad Aware, HiJackThis, and Windows Defender. I even ran all of these programs in Safe Mode. I deleted suspicious files from the registry. I deactivated all startup programs. I purged the internet cache. I swore profusely at the computer. Nothing seemed to work…and the spyware continued to plague us. Eventually I gave in and purchased a new copy of windows XP (for $1) and a new copy of MS Office (for $1) and attempted a complete reinstall which formats the hard drive and kills that damn spyware once and for all. I spent about 2 hours trying to figure out how to get into the Computer’s BIOS so I could change the boot sequence so the computer boots up directly from the Windows Installation CD. Usually you can press F2 or Del or Esc when the computer is booting to enter the BIOS settings but nothing worked. As it turns out, access to the BIOS is locked. I had to open the computer and manually change the position of a jumper on the motherboard. I finally went to bed at 330am…with a computer free of spyware…and a smile on my face. In the morning, I told Rene that he was not allowed to download anymore internet porn from unknown origins. Hahaha…Just kidding…Rene would never use RMF property for something like thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa….sorry, the “a” key was stuck . Hey, what the hell?
