Sri Lanka: Long Term Medical Support and Growth Hormone Treatment for Children

Project Goal:
Provide long-term medical support and treatment to children suffering from congenital health conditions affecting Growth Hormone production and cholesterol modulation.                         

Project Objectives:
To coordinate and manage the system which delivers treatment to the children, provides medical consultations and ensures patient compliance to treatment protocols to optimize the children’s chances for growth and maximum health benefits.

Summary of RMF-sponsored activities carried out during the reporting period under each project objective:

• Organized and held 3 monthly meetings for APRIL, MAY and JUNE 2014.
• Information was collected from the children about their treatment & progress at the monthly meetings.
• Traveling expenses and nutritious food packages were also provided for the children and their families.
• The food parcels worth Rs.2, 199/= each were handed over to the 5 children by Nishantha Sandakelum & Minerva Fernando for the months of APRIL, MAY & JUNE 2014.     

MADUMEKALA

April

• She is 20 years old had come to the meeting with her Mother. Had obtained 04 vials of Growth Hormone for the month of April 2014. Madumekala is continuing sex hormone medication, Climen 1 Tablet daily.
• As Prof. Sujeewa had instructed the Growth Hormone therapy was increased again from 10 clicks to 12 clicks. RMF’s Project Coordinator was given the responsibility to the parents to administer the injection as there were some problems of travelling late in the evening.
• From the 11^th of Sep.2012 her dosage was 10 clicks & this was successful & she had gained in height.
• In the month of March 2014, Prof. Sujeewa had again increased the dosage of Growth Hormone, 10 clicks to 12 clicks.

May

• She come to the meeting with her Mother. Had obtained 2 vials of Growth Hormone for the month of May 2014. Madumekala is continuing sex hormone medication, Climen 1 tablet daily.

June

• She had come to the meeting with her Mother. Obtained the vials of Growth Hormone for the month of June 2014. Madumekala is continuing sex hormone medication, Climen 1 tablet daily.
• From the 11^th of Sep.2012 her dosage was 10 clicks & this was successful & she had gained in height.
• In the month of March 2014, Prof. Sujeewa had again increased the dosage of Growth Hormone, 10 clicks to 12 clicks.

FAZEER AHAMED

April

• Fazeer attended the 4^th monthly meeting of year 2014 not on the scheduled day but he had come on the 28^th.
• His Mother had informed prior to the meeting that Fazeer had to face an interview in a School in Kurunegala for his higher studies as he had successfully done the O/L examination.
• He had visited the clinic at Karapitiya and had received 4 vials of Growth Hormone injections. His dosage is 10 clicks daily at night. For the month of April,  Fazeer had obtained the food parcel too. 

May

• Fazeer had not attended the 5^th monthly meeting of year 2014 but his Mother had come. She had informed that Fazeer had to be in the school regarding of his higher studies as he had successfully done the O/L examination.
• His Mother had visited the Clinic at Karapitiya and had got 4 vials of Growth Hormone injections.  His dosage is 10 clicks daily at night. For the month of May,  Fazeer had reecived the food parcel too.

June

• Fazeer attended the 6^th monthly meeting of year 2014. He obtained 2 vials of Growth Hormone therapy as there was some shortage of the medication from the Company.
• His dosage is 10 clicks daily.

MADURA MADUSHANKA

 

April

• Madura had obtained 4 vials of Growth Hormone for the 4^th month of the year 2014.  He had not gained in height for this time duration.
• Madura had not come for the meeting. His Mother had come as Madura has to attend the private classes and he could not attend the meeting.
• His Mother is very much concerned of his progress and the medical authorities at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital are very satisfied with her.

May

• Madura obtained 4 vials of Growth Hormone for the 5^th month of the year 2014.  He had gained height for this time duration.

June

• Madura had obtained 4 vials of Growth Hormone for the 6^th month of the year 2014. 
• Madura had not come for the meeting but he came the next day with his Mother. Madura has to attend  private classes and he could not attend the meeting as scheduled 

GAYAN MADUSHANKA

April

• In April 2014 the parents had obtained the 4 vials of Growth Hormone & Gayan had visited the Clinic at Karapitiya to check his progress.
• The dosage of Growth Hormone therapy is 9 clicks each night. The Injection of Testoviron was given  on the 10^th of April 2014.
• Gayan had a chance to attend school again. In Hambantota District at Ambalantota there is a Special Education Unit and Gayan was accepted to attend.
• On the 26^th of April Gayan could not come for the meeting due to a funeral of a relative and he came on the 28^th of April instead. 

May

• In May 2014 the parents had obtained the 2 vials of Growth Hormone & Gayan had visited the Clinic at Karapitiya to check his progress.
• The dosage of Growth Hormone therapy is 9 clicks each night. The Injection of Testoviron was given on the 8^th of May.

June

• In June 2014 the parents had obtained 3 vials of Growth Hormone & Gayan had visited the Clinic at Karapitiya to check his progress.
• The dosage of Growth Hormone therapy is 10 clicks each night. The injection of Testoviron was given on the 5^th of June 2014.

THARINDU

April

• The increased dose of his medication had to continue.
• Prof. Sujeewa Amarasinghe, the Senior Pediatrician of Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle in Sri Lanka had referred Tharindu to Dr. Arosha. He has to take Rosuvastatin 40mg & Ezetimibe 10mg every night. He also gets a food parcel with more grains and a packet of fat free milk powder.

• The increased dose of his medication had to continue.

June

• The increased dose of his medication had to continue.
