After our initial needs assessment in October 2017, RMF Founder and CEO Dr. Martina Fuchs visited Puerto Rico in early December 2017, strengthening ties with local authorities, medical professionals, and organizations. RMF then began working closely with Dr. Luis Gonzalez Bermudez, who oversees 5 medical facilities in the Vega Alta municipality. We began supporting the operations of these 5 health clinics and hospitals, and Dr. Martina Fuchs returned in February 2018 to guide our Puerto Rico team regarding the next steps of the program. Although RMF has been responding to Puerto Rico’s need for health and hygiene supplies since our initial involvement in 2017, in 2019 we elected to broaden the scope of our aid in order to address the shelter and infrastructure needs of the population. Thus, RMF initiated a series of construction projects benefiting vulnerable homeowners in the central mountainous region of Puerto Rico, which remains seriously impacted by Hurricane Maria.

Now fully mobilized, RMF Puerto Rico has been continually providing health outreaches throughout rural and urban areas most impacted by Hurricane Maria, focusing our efforts on inland towns where health services and support are most needed.

Starting in April 2019, RMF Puerto Rico has also been focusing on providing vitamins and hygienic products for nursing home residents, most of whom are elderly and bedridden, at homes located in the town of Manatí.

From October to December 2018, RMF Puerto Rico continued distributing supplies received in previous shipments from Direct Relief, which included soap bars and body lotion, adult vitamins and supplements, children’s vitamins, pediatric OTC medicines, and prescription medicines. We received the thirteenth and fourteenth Direct Relief shipment on November 6, 2018 and began distributing these supplies in San Juan, Ciales, Vega Baja, Orocovis, Vega Alta, and Dorado. Together, the thirteenth and fourteenth shipments from Direct Relief were valued at $5,398.30.

From July to September 2018, RMF Puerto Rico continued to distribute supplies received in previous shipments from Direct Relief, which included basic medical equipment, OTC and wound care supplies, Vaseline, insulin, surgical tape, shampoo, body wash, and soap. We received the tenth Direct Relief shipment on July 2, 2018 and the eleventh and twelfth shipments on July 6, 2018 and began distributing these supplies. Together, the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth shipments from Direct Relief were valued at $17,683.30 and contained medicines, medical supplies, and 5 emergency medical backpacks.

Now fully mobilized, RMF Puerto Rico has been continually providing health outreaches throughout rural and urban areas most impacted by Hurricane Maria, focusing our efforts on inland towns where health services and support are most needed. Thanks in part to the donations received from Direct Relief International (DRI), we have been able to provide free influenza vaccinations to 563 patients in the first two weeks of March, including many children and the elderly. Through a separate outreach event, also supported by DRI’s donation, we have provided 20 patients with over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and multivitamins.
