August 24, 2011
Charles Naku and Jonathan White
Target Population:
Students at the Mama Kevina Secondary School, local youth in the surrounding slums, as well as the general population of Tororo, and Malaba at the Uganda/Kenya border, and Lira Nursing School in northern Uganda.
Project Goals:
- Support Mama Kevina with medicine so that the school nurse can treat the children within school premises.
- Supply the students of Mama Kevina Comprehensive Secondary School with food supplies and support the local youths in the surrounding slums, as well as the general population of Tororo.
- Alleviate post-traumatic stress for the students at Mama Kevina Comprehensive Secondary School, local youth in the surrounding slums, the general population of Tororo, and Malaba at the Uganda/Kenya border, and the Lira Nursing School in northern Uganda.
- Decrease cases of malaria among school staff and students.
Summary of RMF-sponsored activities carried out during the reporting period under each project objective:
Mama Kevina Comprehensive was sponsored with food supplies by RMF/WCF. This brought many smiles to the students’ faces and lessened Sr. Clare’s worries though this time food prices have doubled because of price inflation throughout Uganda.
John Ochwo, the heart patient we sponsor is being facilitated with medication funds, given to him monthly. John is also supported with school fees and scholastic materials for the first and second term.
Results and/or accomplishments achieved during this reporting period:
John Ochwo, our rheumatic heart disease patient, receives medications and attends his monthly examination at National Referral Hospital Mulago, Kampala, both services of which are provided by RMF/WCF. John’s health and his education have improved greatly, bringing a smile to John’s whole family.
John Ochwo’s school fees being paid lessened the burden on his family and he concentrated at school without being chased for the school fees balance. This gave him ample time to study hard.
Mama Kevina students are now able to receive all the meals in a day, before RMF/WCF sponsoring them with food, students would only receive porridge in the morning and one meal in a day.
Success Story
John Martin Ochwo’s health has improved greatly after his surgery in India. He was brought back to Uganda still with the help of RMF/WCF and was fed for several months. He is still on monthly medical support by RMF/WCF. John visits the National Referral Hospital in Kampala monthly for his medication and check up. This year, John started receiving school fees from RMF. This has lessened the burden on John’s family who was straining to raise John’s school fees.
