Summary of Activities
- Paid teachers’ salaries and support staff’s wages promptly, which is one of the reasons World Children’s Fund Mama Kevina Secondary School has been able to maintain highly motivated teachers and staff.
- Paid the school’s utility bills, mainly electricity.
- All subjects, as outlined by the Ministry of Education, are being taught. These include mathematics, physics, agriculture, chemistry, English language and literature, geography, history, commerce, accounting, information technology, Christian religious education, and fine arts. The school employs teachers for all these subjects, making their expertise available to students.
- Teaching and learning continued throughout this reporting period without interruption, and the students are keeping up with the pace of the syllabus.
- Continued to beautify and maintain the cleanliness of the school compound and facilities. The well-maintained school compound provides an environment conducive for learning.
- Conducted beginning-of-term and mid-term assessments of students.
- Mentored the university and college students who came to the school to complete their teaching internships.
- Our students sat for their first final examinations before the main examination, referred to as briefing, which is intended to prepare them for the final examinations by giving them the basic ground rules and expectations of the examiners.
The school’s annual inter-house music, dance, and drama competition was organized and conducted, and Anthony House emerged victorious. According to the Ministry of Education, extra-curricular activities, including technology and sports, are an important part of the curriculum. Mama Kevina Secondary School is proud to properly follow the guidelines, which enable us to produce well-rounded graduates.
Meeting National Standards
The construction of a semi-permanent examination hall was completed, which will help us to accommodate all of the candidates undertaking their final examinations at the school. This structure has enabled us to meet the required Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) standards.
Students Help With Meals
Maintaining Food Quality
These students are directly involved in the preparation of their meals under the supervision of the sister in charge. Students engage in activities such as peeling and cutting vegetables, which helps ease the workload in the kitchen area and ensure the high-quality of the school’s food.
Prompt Medical Treatment
Children who were ill during the reporting period received prompt medical treatment. This was possible because of the standby medical staff at World Children’s Fund Mama Kevina Secondary School.
Student Population Growth
Increasing Salaries and Staff
We have recently increased the teachers’ allowances to compensate them according to the growing number of students. To accommodate the school’s growth, we have also begun looking into hiring more teachers and providing on-campus housing for teachers.
School Purchases Made
Providing for School Necessities
Purchases made were as follows:
• Required scholastic materials for the reporting period.
• All required reagents and specimens needed for practical subjects.
• Sufficient supplies, medicines, and food to keep the school going throughout the reporting period.
• Materials to conduct end-of-term examinations.
• Teaching aids such as chalk, pens, and stationery.
Mama Kevina Comprehensive Secondary School was opened in 2006 with international financial support, and with the goal of providing both secondary education and vocational training. The student population is mostly from Northern Uganda where many children have been affected by ongoing wars, floods and HIV/AIDS. Many of the students’ parents were killed by rebels or AIDS which left many of the children as orphans; some boys had been forced to be child soldiers. Enrolled at the school are students ranging in age from 11 to 24, who attend secondary grades 1 to secondary 4.
Support World Children’s Fund Mama Kevina School with the following:
• Food supply for the students and staffs
• Support of the school garden work: planting of the maize, and now they are weeding
• Anti-malarial medication and mosquito net supplies for the students and staff
• Support the school clinic with other medications
• Payment of staff salaries
• Support computer purchases to teach IT skills
• Purchase of text books and other school teaching supplies
• Purchase of office equipment supplies like photocopier, printer, and office furniture
• Facilitate participating in community outreach and inter-house competitions with music, dance, drama, regional games and sports held in partnership with the Tororo District
• Support of infrastructure/constructions projects on campus
