Academy Commemorates World AIDS Day: Q4 2018

Summary of Activities
- School fees were paid for children in candidate classes to ensure they could complete their examinations without interruption. Buwate Sports Academy saw 15 candidates complete primary seven and 4 candidates complete their Ordinary Level of education.
- Buwate Sports Academy organized a Christmas Cup for the under-15 children. This was held at the Kira sports grounds, where the team was defeated at the semi-finals.
- Buwate Sports Academy organized friendly matches during the long holiday. One was for the under-13 Buwate boys with an Italian-sponsored team, held at the Nambole National Stadium. The game ended with a tie score of 1-1.
- The older Kireka boys participated a tournament called the Uganda Cup, which comprised under-20 football (American soccer) teams in Uganda. The Kireka boys won with a 2-0 score against Kampala Kids Club at Kololo High School sports grounds, but unfortunately lost the match with Kampala Junior Team, with a 1-3 score, held at Nakivubo Blue Primary School sports grounds.
- Buwate Sports Academy has greatly impacted the lives of its vocational trainees by enabling students, specifically those who were previously employed as house helpers in the community, to start up their own business and generate a daily income.
- Boosted the hairdressing department by purchasing hairdressing items for level one. The number of entrants enrolling for hairdressing classes in the slum area of Kireka has drastically increased, so now the academy is running a class of 33 students there, and new students arrive daily.
- Wages for Buwate Sports Academy support staff were paid promptly, enabling the program to run smoothly.
- Purchased essential sports materials for the academy, such as balls, uniforms, socks, and sports bibs, which was all possible through RMF funding.
- The children were safely transported to and from football (American soccer) games outside the academy during the reporting period thanks to RMF’s timely funding and early preparations.

Guiding Youth
Buwate Sports Academy commemorated World AIDS Day by hosting Mr. Ofwono of Reach Out Mbuya Parish HIV/AIDS Initiative, who sensitized the children in the Kireka and Buwate community on issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.
Growing Stronger
Enjoying a Hot Meal
Food and charcoal were purchased so that we could provide the children with a meal during training sessions, away games, and also during holidays such as World AIDS Day. When the children are well fed, they have more energy, better morale, and are able to perform better, producing better results.

Buwate Sports Academy hosted two visitors from World Children’s Fund, Ms. Kathryn and Mr. Tim, whose purpose was to follow up on project activities.

Supplying New Students
40 students have completed their training in both hairdressing and tailoring. RMF purchased materials for the hairdressing and tailoring department students.
Monthly formative meetings were held in the vocational department. During these meetings, the issues discussed include necessary repair and maintenance of existing machines and customer care service techniques.

Buwate Sports Academy and the local council organized a Welcome to Holiday Football Gala, and six teams participated in the matchess: Victory Youth Academy, Kati Sports Academy, Namayundu Soccer Academy, Kiteyika Soccer Academy, Africa Youth Soccer Academy, and Buwate Sports Academy.
The Buwate under-12 boys were the overall winner in all six matches played.

The vocational department has successfully trained and prepared its students to compete in the outside market, and with RMF’s support, they have been able to establish small startups.
Buwate Sports Academy’s hairdressing department has attracted a high turnout of students due to the current demand for salon work. We now have 16 students, and the number continues to increase.

Background
In early 2013, RMF, the Mother Teresa Children’s Foundation in Italy (Devoti Madre Terese Per I Bambini) and World Children’s Fund started funding support of the Buwate Sports Academy. Buwate Sports Academy is a sports club and activity group for children living in Buwate village, Kira Town, Kampala District. The Buwate Sports Academy seeks develop the youth advancement component of our humanitarian work through games, sports training, vocational training and other educational opportunities.
Objectives
- Provide funding to assist the operations and growth of Buwate Sports Academy
- Provide funding to allow children from surrounding slums to attend school
- Provide funding for vocational training opportunities including tailoring, hairdressing, and cosmetology
- Increase Buwate’s popularity in hopes that this will attract social services from the government and other development partners

Eva Namakula
Example of Determination
Eva Namakula, a former student in the vocational training department, came to the project with no hope of further studies after completing her Advanced Level education. But she was determined, and after the six months in the vocational training department, she tried very hard to look for startup capital to open a salon. Eventually, she was successful in receiving a loan and started the business. She is grateful to MTCF and RMF for their support.
