Panyadoli Vocational Training Institute- February 2016 Progress Report

Summary of Activities
This report covers the second month of our three-month skills training program at RMF’s Panyadoli Vocational Training Institute (PVTI) in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement. The training started on January 11, 2016 and is scheduled to end on April 11, 2016.
There are 95 students enrolled to receive vocational skills training.
The Panyadoli Vocational Training Institute offers four program areas:
- Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy
- Tailoring and Garment Cutting
- Bricklaying and Concrete Practice
- Carpentry and Joinery
This report highlights the Vocational Training Institute’s achievements and challenges during the month of February 2016.
Attendance
Trainees’ general attendance been good, although training days were interrupted by national holidays for presidential, parliamentary, mayoral, and council elections. The Vocational Training Institute was obliged to follow the national directives so as to allow trainees and instructors to participate in their national rights.
Settlement programs of food distribution also affected trainees’ attendance; whenever there were food distribution activities in the settlement, trainees went to get their rations.
Four trainees intentionally or unintentionally dropped out of the training and these included three from the TGC and one from the HDBT departments. The table in the "More Photos" section illustrates the summary of the general attendance and the dropout with reasons as to why they dropped out of the training.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Molding of Trainees Bricks
Creating Needed Supplies
Manufacture of trainees’ practice bricks is near completion. These are specific bricks, types of 9”, 4”, 2”. A total of 7,000 bricks have been molded, and after the bricks are baked, an estimated 6,000 or more will be secured for the trainees’ practice work.
Progress of the BCP Project
Construction Going Well
The BCP project made tremendous progress during the month of February, with the completion of inside and outside wall plastering, and the installation of all nine windows and one external door. Trainees (supervised by their teacher) also completed the veranda, shed, and a ramp outside the building. They also screeded the floor throughout the building and built a doorframe for the inside door.
Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy
Hands on Learning
Trainees are still handling module three, which consists of different hairdressing approaches. During the month of February, the trainees were trained how to plait three threes, pencil, how to style and blow dry a client’s hair, and how to finally set a pineapple style.
Bricklaying and Concrete Practice
Putting up Walls
During the month of February, trainees concentrated on walling, and four types of walls were made: T-junction, return wall, double return walls, and cross walls
Carpentry and Joinery
Practical Skills
During the month of February, trainees were each able to make a stool. They were then put in groups of three and made four tables, two door frames, a cloth rack, and three beds.
Tailoring and Garment Cutting
Clothing Made
Three main items were made by trainees during the month of February, including a blouse, a fish skirt, and a short-sleeved shirt

Background
The Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement in Bweyale, Uganda, is a UNHCR managed refugee settlement that provides shelter, land, and support for more than 100,000 people. They are comprised of refugees from Kenya, DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan. RMF has partnered with UNHCR in supporting Kiryandango Refugee Settlement, the surrounding community of Bweyale, and the greater Kiryandongo District (an additional 266,197 people) with health care, education, and vocational training since 2008.
Objectives
- To serve as a health care implementation partner with the UNHCR and Ugandan Government
- To provide health care services to over 100,000 refugees and persons in the community via the Panyadoli Health Centres
- To provide skills training for South Sudanese refugees to enable them to become self-reliant
