Update on Achievements

Operational Context

On January 10, 2016, Real Medicine Foundation (RMF) signed a tripartite agreement (a follow-up to our 2014 agreement) with UNHCR and the Government of Uganda to implement a health program aimed at addressing two goals: emergency operations, and care and maintenance of refugees and asylum seekers in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement through the delivery of quality healthcare services.

How many health facilities are there? How many staff? Which partners? UNHCR?

RMF/UNHCR is directly supporting a total of three (3) health facilities: Panyadoli Health Centre III, Panyadoli Hills Health Centre II, and the Reception Centre Clinic. There have also been significant numbers of PoC (Persons of Concern) accessing services at Nyakadot Health Centre II, as some of the refugees have sought to settle at Bweyale Trading Centre. Nyakadot Health Centre II is located in the host community.

How many consultations were carried out this week?
  • 4,437 consultationswere conducted during this reporting period: 2,487 at Panyadoli Health Centre III, 867 at Panyandoli Hills Health Centre II, and 1,083 at Nyakadot Health Centre II.
  • 79 referrals were supported: 30 nationals and 49 refugees (49 to Kiryandongo District Referral Hospital, 18 to Gulu Regional Hospital, 2 to Lacor, 1 to Bitaabika, and 9 to Mulago National Referral Hospital).

Main Gaps and Solutions

  • Shortage of staff in the In-Patient, Antenatal, and Maternity departments. Due to an overwhelming number of patients, it is extremely difficult to provide quality health care. Given more staff, the quality of service and patients’ adherence to medication would improve.

Reproductive Health

How many ANC consultations? Break down of refugees/nationals? Which partners? UNHCR?
  • 797 ANC consultations (99 refugees and 698 nationals) were registered during the reporting period: 655 at Panyadoli Health Centre III, 68 at Panyadoli Hills Health Centre II, and 74 Nyakadot Health Centre II.
  • 112 Maternity ward admissions (39 refugees and 73 nationals) were registered at the Maternity ward during the reporting period at Panyadoli Health Centre III.
  • 121 babies were delivered (40 refugees and 72 nationals) by skilled health workers: 69 at Panyadoli Health Centre III, 12 at Panyadoli Hills Health Centre II, and 31 at Nyakadot Health Centre II.
Is this figure included in the number of consultations above under Health?
  • Yes

Other notable activities?

  • 668 new arrivals (316 male and 352 female) were screened and registered at the Reception Centre during the reporting period.
  • 388 complicated cases (112 in the Maternity ward, 67 in the Male ward, 77 in the Female ward, 117 in the Paediatric ward, and 15 in the Nutritional ward) were admitted through the inpatient department.
  • 4 deaths occurred (2 refugees and 2 nationals) causes: 1 refugee died of a fatal boda boda accident, 1 refugee was an infant who died at home — unknown cause of death, 1 national died of anaemia, and 1 national died of malaria.
  • 100 supplementary feedings and 54 outpatient therapeutic care sessions were conducted in the Nutritional Unit.
  • 15 people were enrolled in the ART clinic.
  • 316 children were immunized (static): 161 male and 155 female.
  • 263 children were given vitamin A at Panyadoli Health Centre III, Panyadoli Hills Health Centre II, the Reception Centre Clinic, and Nyakadot Health Centre II.
  • 361 children were dewormed at Panyadoli Health Centre III, Panyadoli Hills Health Centre II, the Reception Centre Clinic, and Nyakadot Health Centre II.

How many vaccinations? Which vaccines? Breakdown of refugees/nationals?
  • 834 < 835 people were vaccinated: 316 at Panyadoli Health Centre III, 398 at the Reception Centre Clinic, 25 at Panyadoli Hills Health Centre II, and 95 at Nyakadot Health Centre II during the reporting period.
  • Vaccinations administered were for BCG, polio, DPT, and measles.

Background

The project has been implemented in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement as part of the emergency response to the South Sudanese refugee influx. Health services are provided through the established health centers: Panyadoli Hills Health Centre II, Panyadoli Health Centre III, Nyakadot Health Centre II, and the Reception Centre Clinic with community-based care supporting both the refugee and host community.
Funding is provided by UNHCR to aid the influx of refugees and asylum seekers into Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement. The number of refugees is projected to increase. This is due to the political instability in South Sudan, as the cease-fire agreement signed in Ethiopia has not yielded peace as anticipated.
Real Medicine Foundation (RMF) has hired a manager who is responsible for the overall implementation and coordination of planned interventions, whereas OPM and UNHCR do oversight functions. Activities are planned, coordinated, and reviewed on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis through coordination meetings chaired by OPM at the settlement level.

Objectives

  • Emergency operations
  • Care and maintenance of refugees and asylum seekers in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement through the delivery of quality health care services
  • Ensure optimal access to reproductive health and HIV/AIDS services
