*Real Medicine Foundation South Sudan and UNICEF South Sudan Partnership*
Malnutrition Treatment, Education and Outreach in Jonglei State, South Sudan
Real Medicine Foundation (RMF) is proud to announce a new partnership with UNICEF and the South Sudan Ministry of Health to bring our expertise in Malnutrition Treatment, Education and Outreach to one of the hardest hit areas of South Sudan, Jonglei State. The partnership agreement between RMF and UNICEF was signed in December 2014 with RMF preparing for launch in January and rolling out the activities in February, 2015.
This new initiative is designed to ensure that all children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) are reached with a package of integrated nutrition services in the counties of Jonglei State assigned to RMF by UNICEF: Nyirol, Pibor, Ayod, and Fangak.
The proposed nutrition interventions will be coordinated through the Nutrition Cluster and with other relevant clusters including Health, Food and WASH, and will be implemented with financial and supply/logistics support from UNICEF, World Food Program (WFP) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
RMF’s services will serve a total population at 240,000, reaching 45,000 children and benefitting an estimated 7,214 total SAM Children (6-59 months of age) and at least 60% of Pregnant & Lactating Women (including IDPs and host communities) in each targeted county.
RMF’s background in Malnutrition Programs:
RMF has extensive experience in Malnutrition treatment through our Malnutrition Eradication and Outreach Program in Madhya Pradesh, India which carries India's highest malnutrition burden with 60% of its children under 5 malnourished – 6 million children whose futures are at risk.
This program was recently recognized and funded by the World Bank Development Marketplace and is being studied for its effectiveness. RMF is keen to translate its experience and lessons learned in India to South Sudan context in close partnership with UNICEF and other members of the nutrition cluster.
Jonglei State, South Sudan Program
The proposed strategy for nutrition in Jonglei State is designed to ensure the provision of lifesaving nutrition services for acutely malnourished children (boys and girls), pregnant and lactating women; to prevent poor nutritional outcomes through the following activities: rigorous promotion of optimal infant feeding practices, proper hygiene/sanitation and improved maternal nutrition; micronutrients supplementation and nutrition education on locally available foods; setting up of a robust reporting and information system and monitoring mechanism; and an establishment of a surveillance system, with an emphasis on capacity development of health care providers for all target areas to be implemented in partnership with the South Sudan Ministry or Health, CHD, UNICEF, WFP.
