HUMANITY UNITED PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR THE JUBA TEACHING HOSPITAL IN SOUTH SUDAN

San Francisco – December 30, 2013 – As the instability and violence in South Sudan continues for a second week, Humanity United today announced a grant of $50,000 for the Real Medicine Foundation to provide supplies, medicine and support to the Juba Teaching Hospital during the current crisis.

According to Dr. Martina Fuchs, the founder and CEO of the Real Medicine Foundation, Juba Teaching Hospital is one of the only safe places for urgent care.  “Unfortunately, the hospital is completely flooded with patients.  Many people have been killed and many are arriving with severe wounds, and there is an urgent need for blood,” said Fuchs.  “Many patients are dying because of a lack of basic resources and supplies.”

Juba Teaching Hospital is a 580-bed facility and the only referral hospital in South Sudan. With an estimated population of 10.84 million, the country suffers from a lack of proper functioning primary health care facilities.  As a result, many South Sudanese have nowhere to go but to this national referral hospital.

“As we all know, the situation in Juba and throughout South Sudan remains very tense and unstable,” said Randy Newcomb, President and CEO of Humanity United.  “This grant will be used to procure medicine, medical supplies and equipment for Juba Teaching Hospital.”

Humanity United has been involved in peace building efforts in Sudan and South Sudan since 2005.  In recent weeks, the foundation has publicly called on South Sudan’s leaders to commit to peace and show restraint in their actions.  Humanity United is supporting other relief efforts and is currently working with diaspora leaders to make sure their voices are heard in South Sudan.
