After the terrible disasters over the last few years, I wanted to offer financial support to those in need but didn’t know where to go. My concern was that if I gave money to a large charity, more would go to supporting bureaucracy and infrastructure than to the people who really need it.
Almost at the same time I was trying to figure out what to do, my friend Lauren Brenner-Katz told me about a doctor she knew who had just come back from being “in the trenches,” volunteering to treat people after the tsunami disaster. She said that this doctor, Martina Fuchs, worked with a non-profit foundation called “Real Medicine” and that they specialized in getting real doctors and real treatment on the ground as fast as possible to ease the suffering of children who have been affected by disasters. In addition, Real Medicine treats the children for both physical AND psychological traumas suffered — which made complete sense to me. After all, can you image being a young child and your parents have gone missing or were killed? Healing the mind and heart in such a situation is just as — or even more — important than healing the body.
After doing a little research on Martina and Real Medicine, it was obvious that this was an organization that deserved real support — and real gratitude — for the selfless mission they have undertaken.

Dear Real Medicine,
There isn't a week that goes by when I don't think of those toys in
Sri Lanka...and what a miracle the whole experience has been. Every so
often I go to the Real Medicine site and look at the pictures of Alana's
donated toys. My heart still feels joy when I see the photos on the website
of the last trip.

From our friend, Amelia Super – an email to families who helped her collect
toys for Real Medicine to give to children evacuated after Hurricane Katrina:
Dear Friends,
Wow! I had a car full of toys today and felt so grateful to everyone
who participated!! It felt so good knowing we can make a difference even
in this very small way. Thank you to each and everyone... I feel truly
lucky to have such an amazing community right here. Lauren, the Creative
Director of Real Medicine, is a friend of ours and is a very amazing lady:
She homeschools her two daughters and is a copywriter and to take this
on as well is a huge undertaking. I am honored to have helped! I thought
about donating to other organizations and know they need our money, but
I also know that it can caught up in bureaucracy. So if anyone is interested
in a direct impact rather than the red tape, feel free to call or email
Lauren at Lauren@RealMedicineFoundation.org. In whatever way you do your
thing out there, know that we are all standing proudly together trying
to make the world a better place for our children and their futures. Today
is a very great day!! THANK YOU!! I am honored to know you!!
Love, Amelia

Dear Real Medicine,
Hi, I’m Jade Brenner-Katz, and I’m with The Real Medicine “Youth Team."
I want to say THANK YOU to Dr. Marina Fuchs and tell everyone how my family
and I got involved with Real Medicine.
After the tsumani happened, I had a dream one night that I had a
carnival in my garage to raise money to help children in Sri Lanka. I
woke up and I told my Mom about it and she said “Maybe we could really
do that.” But I wanted to make sure the money would actually get to the
kids who needed help. We tried to find an organization that personally
knew the kids. Somebody told us about a doctor named Martina who had just
gotten back from Sri Lanka. So we contacted her and she came over for
dinner and we all just clicked! I knew this was where I wanted to donate
money and do whatever I could to help.
Martina told me about a little girl named Nimasha in Sri Lanka. So
I started to do some small jobs and also save up my birthday money so
I could send Nimasha money every month. I have a photo of me with a stuffed
animal and a note I sent her. And I got a photo back from Nimasha with
the stuffed animal and a note from her. So I feel like she’s my friend.
Then I heard about a little girl named Mademekala in Sri Lanka who
needs medicine to live. I baked 5 dozen cookies and went out and sold
them on the street in my neighborhood. I am raised $70 and gave it to
Real Medicine to buy more medicine for Mademekala.
Martina, I want to thank you because you are so great and you give
all of us a way to make a difference through Real Medicine. YOU ARE MY
HERO!
Love, Jade Brenner-Katz

From Jahna Perricone, Vice President, www.OmStream.com
The people of Real Medicine are an inspiration! I began working with
this amazing organization during their benefit celebration to raise money
for those in need all over the world and to celebrate everyone involved
in Real Medicine. I was in complete awe regarding what they have been
able to accomplish throughout the world in such a short period of time!
As I came to know the Real Medicine team members, I realized the secret
to this organization's success: It's the honesty, integrity, kindness
and persistence within every single person involved. They all live from
a space of total integrity, thereby creating an atmosphere of positive,
life-affirming possibilities. It is an honor to be part of this wonderful
organization!
