Meet Suzan Phoni Loro

2013 JCONAM Graduate

November 07, 2014 - South Sudan

Suzan Phoni Loro is from Juba and is 32 years old. She is married, has two children, and came to JCONAM after working as a certified nurse right at Juba Teaching Hospital. She hopes to resume working at JTH or with a local NGO but says that despite being from Central Equatoria, she would be willing to relocate to anywhere in South Sudan for a good job.

Her biggest hope is that support will be provided for new graduates to attend continuing education where they can upgrade their skills once they are in the workforce. For example, she would like to learn the advanced skills necessary to care for ICU patients. She also says that internet access and/or the ability to access textbooks would be incredibly helpful since she otherwise has no resources available.

I was so excited after graduation that my long awaited dreams came to pass and sincerely speaking its not easy to find a scholarship like I did I must thanks God for this wonderful opportunity. I resume work at JTH with responsibility of being Nurse In charge of ward 3 Surgical where people look to you for guidance, colleagues at work and students from both JCONAM and Health Science Institute for mentorship. There certain things that I did not know I had to learn them on the Job like Glassicocoma scale, drainages for patients in different parts of the body. The biggest challenge is lack of equipments to handle road traffic accidents like suction machine for draining excess bleeding, Oxygen concentrators. I have lost a patient who fell off a military vehicle and had Head Injury the bleeding was in excess from the mouth, nose , ears and the head I was helpless because I cannot drain that excess bleeding what we did was to put cotton wool and gorse. Another Challenge is that despite upgrading with a Diploma I still earn the same salary of a certified Nurse it’s not only demoralizing but it frustrate once effort to concentrate on the Job.

Her recommendation is that NGOs should help equip the Surgical department with necessary tools and Equipments for them and the students to work and learn better procedures.

Then continues workshops or refresher trainings needs to be organize to help them increase on their knowledge and skills.
