REAL MEDICINE
TEAM AFRICA - Kenya
- Omar Amir
is from Karachi, Pakistan. He studied at Dartmouth College on scholarship
where he was a national Beckman scholar for research in Organometallic Chemistry.
In Pakistan, he worked with War Against Rape, an NGO based in Karachi, documenting
cases of rape and violence against women. He is a basic EMT, speaks Urdu,
Hindi and Arabic and is a graduate of the Master of Science program at the
Harvard School of Public Health studying social epidemiology. He was awarded
the Student Recognition Award from Harvard University for his work done in
northern Pakistan over the winter of 2005-6.
- Ian Swan is currently a student completing
his Bachelor's degree in biology with a focus on the neurosciences. As a member
of the Bowker Creek Initiative, a local municipal environmental committee,
he has been active in trying to preserve and enhance the social and ecological
benefits of an existing urban watershed in his home town of Victoria, BC,
Canada. A desire to help strengthen the global community by supporting the
revitalization of small communities has led Ian to join RMF.

TEAM AFRICA - Mozambique
- Helen
Ouyang, MD, MPH
finished her third year of medical school at Johns Hopkins Medical School,
and is a graduate of the Master's degree in Public Health in
International Health at Harvard School of Public Health. She did her
undergraduate studies at Brown University, in Development Studies. Her
interests are broad, including sustainable development post humanitarian
crises, human rights, and infectious diseases. Internationally, she
has worked in Kenya, Peru, South Africa, and most recently Pakistan
and India. She plans on doing a residency in Emergency Medicine.
- Steve Henrichon,
MS is currently studying pre-medicine in a post-bacculareate program through
UCLA. Steve works for CoreMedical Group as a headhunter in the healthcare
sector specializing in allied health modalities. In his spare time, he volunteers
with PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) as well as with the Emergency Department
at the Children’s Hospital of LA. Steve is also involved in medical research
at UCLA Medical Center focusing on cardiothoracic surgery. Steve holds a BS
in Business Administration and an MS in Telecommunications. He is a yoga enthusiast,
avid scuba diver, world traveler, and an Eagle Scout.
REAL MEDICINE TEAM AFRICA - Nigeria
- Sope Ogunyemi was born in Lagos, Nigeria and relocated with her family to the United States, when she was five. Since then, she has lived between Nigeria and various cities in the United States. She received her B.A. in Liberal Arts from Dartmouth College, in New Hampshire. Her professional background is in Entertainment Marketing, having worked at CBS, Nickelodeon and the Oxygen Network. The project management skills she gained in the fast-paced media world have been extremely helpful in developing the Real Medicine Nigeria project. She is very happy to be a part of the Real Medicine team.
- Ayodeji (Deji)
Shedu MD, MPH worked for several years as a clinician in his native Nigeria
at the primary, secondary and tertiary care levels after graduating from medical
school. He has a passion for providing total rehabilitation to chronically
ill patients and reintegrating them back into society. He also has deep interests
in management of healthcare delivery organizations especially clinics and
hospitals for under-served rural and urban populations. In June 2006, he graduates
from the Master's in Public Health program in health policy and management
from Harvard School of Public Health.
Deji plays ping pong in his spare time.
- Dr. Nkem
Ndionuka studied Medicine in Kharkov, Ukraine, graduated in 1994, and
attended post-graduate studies in Switzerland. In 1996 he began practicing
medicine in Nigeria, working in both the private and public sectors. He specializes
in mental health with a special interest in substance abuse and rehablitation.
By the end of 2006, he expects to complete a Master's Degree program in Refugees
and Humanitarian Studies at the University of Lagos.
He has a burning passion for the provision of total healthcare for all, especially
the under-privileged and vulnerable members of society like slum dwellers,
displaced persons, refugees, chidren and the aged.
His hobbies include reading, gardening and learning foreign languages. He
is fluent in Russian and English and has some ability in German and French.
He loves new challenges and would like to participate in the formulation of
healthcare policy in international medical organizations.
- Pei-Hsuan
Tsai, MA, RN finished High School in Austria before coming to the States
to obtain her nursing degree. While working as a nurse on a general internal
medicine floor, she attended Graduate School part time to obtain her Masters
in Nursing Informatics. As a RN, she gained experience in gerontology, as
well as college health nursing. Now, working in the field of healthcare informatics,
she still has strong interest in clinical nursing and moonlights periodically.
She believes that her clinical experience as well as strong interest will
be very useful in various projects with RMF. In college, she participated
in fund raising events to benefit the victims of El Nino in Peru as well as
the impoverished homeless and orphans. Besides being an avid advocate for
a cleaner environment, she enjoys traveling and learning about other cultures.
- Ufuoma Christopher
Okoro M.Sc Pharm, MPSN after graduation from the Ukrainian Academy of
Pharmacy, Kharkov, has worked for several years both in the primary and secondary
levels of health care delivery. He has also worked in regulatory affairs at
the Pharmacists Council Of Nigeria. His interests include caring for the less
privileged, community service and rehabilitation work. He is currently the
senior pharmacist in charge at the Joint venture pharmacy, General Hospital
Lagos.
- Dotun Adeboye
Ogunyemi, M.D. is Associate Director OB/GYN Residency Program, Cedars
Sinai Medical center in Los Angeles, California. He is also Chief of Inpatient
Obstetrics, Clerkship Director for the third year medical students clerkship,
and an Associate Professor with the David Geffen School of Medicine at the
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
He has received numerous awards for medical education and clinical research
throughout his career, is an active author and editor for many medical journals
and is a leader of several medical professional societies.
He graduated from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, completed an obstetrics
and gynecology residency at LA County King Drew Medical Center and fulfilled
a maternal fetal medicine fellowship at David Geffen school of Medicine at
UCLA.
